‘Oh!’ Diana exclaimed, and found that she could say no more.
Philippe lifted her chin, looked deep into her eyes, and kissed her under the gaze of his godmother, and the man Diana had once been engaged to marry. They both looked extraordinarily happy and relieved, and if he was at all envious Michael hid the sentiment deep in his heart.
The Comte stood up and, helping Diana to her feet also, led her up to his godmother.
‘Now I really am proud to present to you my future Comtesse, Marraine,’ he said.
The Duchesse stood on tiptoe to embrace and kiss Diana.
‘Tiens!’ she exclaimed. ‘This is an occasion for champagne, and it shall be brought, instantly.’ She pounced on an electric bell-push. ‘We will drink to my godson’s children, and to his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, too!’
Covered in confusion, blushing deliciously, Diana looked up into Philippe’s eyes. But all he said to her, quietly, was:
‘We will drink to our unending happiness, sweetheart!’
